Course Descriptions
LIS 519 - Selection, Acquisition
and Management of Non-Book Materials
An examination of the various aspects of selection, acquisition and
management of non-book materials. The items to be considered include: archival
materials, audio tapes, films, maps, microforms, models, multi-media kits,
simulation materials, program materials, art reproductions, holograms,
original art, flat pictures, posters, charts, and new developments in communication/information
technology.
LIS 531 - Marketing of Information
Services
This course combines theory and practice to help participants become
aware of marketing in the information community. Theory, strategy, conceptualization,
application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation are included. Real-world
information marketing, merchandising and public relations problems will
be examined.
LIS 580 - Intellectual Freedom
An investigation into the ideal of freedom as it relates to human thought
and communication and the effect on library and information resources and
services. The effects of censorship, pressure-tactics, cultural pluralism,
personal bias of the professional practitioner, the 'ism' problem, and
the very utilization of the physical location for library and information
are examined for the effect on equal access to materials. Professional
librarian and information specialist concerns are examined and practical
applications of principles are discussed in problem solving sessions.
LIS 581 - Management of Libraries
and Information Agencies
It is recommended that students enter this course during the final
stages of their plan of study to better appreciate the study of management
techniques applicable to the variety of information service agencies and
to managers at all levels of the administrative hierarchy. Through case
studies, problem-solving exercises and some role-playing, there is ample
opportunity to translate management theories into practice.
LIS 584 - Academic and Research Libraries
This seminar will provide a learning experience which emphasizes the
following: Creative, imaginative and reflective interaction, Long-range
and broad goals with flexible ceilings, Flexibility, Thoughtful practice
and application, Thoughtful conformity and nonconformity, Unlimited sharing
of ideas and feelings, Learning by thinking, Independent learning by those
who have learned how to learn.
LIS 526/598 - Independent Study / Directed
Study
Effective University Teaching Workshop
Present in a practical manner teaching techniques and methods which
can be used to help improve the quality of college and university teaching.
Use of classroom teaching equipment, WebBased support and other resources
will also be demonstrated.
