Classifying Toys

Advantages:

     Toys as part of a library collection can:
  • Be used as a tool for bringing in new users to a library.

  • Provide access to toys that some cannot afford or would  normally not have at home. 

  • Creates an atmosphere where a user, such as a parent or caregiver, can have access to advice and support from other parents. 

  • Increase the availability and accessibility of approriate educational and recreational early intervention material. 
  • Involve part of the community that was not involved with the library before (different age groups, clubs, organizations.) 

  • Can create a new atmosphere and image for a library... One that is non-threatening to children; encouraging them to use the library. 
  • Introduces a new level  of interaction among people in the library. Children can interact with other children, parents have a time and place to interact with their children and other parents. 

  • Toys can offer a time to experience play in a non-clinical or integrated setting.

  • Involvement of the different generations with one another. 

  • Toys can go anywhere to a:  community room, hospital, treatment center, store, school, religious institution, daycare or nursery school, private home, or prison.  They are portable.

  • Toys target a large audience:  children, teenagers, the handicapped,  adults with special needs and even senior citizens. 

  • Many toys are inexpensive.
